10 -10.30: Coffee and registration
10.30: Welcome (SW Fed)
10.45 -13.00: Is independence the answer? An update on Hilary’s current research and a workshop session on good governance.
Hilary McGowan, Museum and Heritage Consultant, is currently researching a new report looking at museums who used to be local authority services and now are independent trusts. She is examining how these independent museums are faring, especially with their funding agreements under pressure and what they feel independence has allowed them to do which they would not otherwise have been able to achieve. Is the mix of services within an organisation a key ingredient, as some are museums only, some have libraries or the arts, and others have leisure and parks?
13:00 – 14:00: LUNCH
You are welcome to bring your own packed lunch or the museum has a café.
14:00-14.45: Case Study 1: Adapting to change and facing the future
In July 2013 the management of the Corinium Museum was outsourced from Cotswold District Council as part of a wider Leisure and Cultural contract to an independent leisure company called Everyone Active. Amanda Hart, the Museum Director, will discuss the new arrangements and what the change has meant for the organisation
14.45-15.30: Case Study 2: Independence versus Security
As many local authorities move services into independent organisational models, what is the price of independence? How secure are these services in the future and what are the pitfalls to avoid? This session will explore the transfer of a wide range of services to The Cheltenham Trust which was recently formed in October 2014. Julie Finch, the new CEO will speak about the experience so far and what the future looks like for trusts.
15.30-15:45: Comfort break/tea/coffee
15:45-16.30:Case Study 3: Surviving and thriving in a world of change
Change is constant. The service, although still under review around trust status is moving ahead regardless with full local authority governance until told otherwise. Safe is risky. We’ve reorganised our service to be more flexible to the opportunities and challenges ahead. Zak Mensah, Head of Transformation for Bristol Museums, will discuss the changes and the new direction of the Service
16.30: Evaluation and Close.
If you are not already a member of the SW Fed you can still come along - either by joining the Fed beforehand or on the day.
If you have a suitable meeting room and would like to host future forums (especially if you can offer free or discounted facilities); have ideas for a topic, or a case study/experience you would like to share please contact us email@example.com
