Description

About the Day

A Forward/Business Plan is a wonderful tool that will help your museum to thrive, enable it to use its resources effectively and convince its stakeholders that it is worth supporting. The process of drawing up a Forward/Business Plan is as empowering as using the finished document to deliver programmes and monitor progress.

This interactive session focuses on the steps needed to draw up a Plan that will become indispensable to your organisation. It will help you tackle this often daunting task which is fundamental to a successful organisation and a cornerstone of Museum Accreditation.

Who should attend?

Paid staff or volunteers (trustees and managers) who are tasked to draw up and deliver their museum’s Forward/Business Plan – the team lead or team members – and people who would like to refresh their planning skills.

We recommend that delegates attend this session in pairs if possible to make the most of the practical activities.

What will you learn?

The session will help you to:

  • Understand the value of a good Forward/Business Plan

  • Understand the role of the Forward/Business Plan in Arts Council England’s Museum Accreditation Scheme

  • Think about who should be involved in the process and how it should be managed

  • Work through the steps needed to compile a robust Forward/Business Plan, including reviewing performance, analyzing your operating environment, identifying strategic objectives, drawing up a realistic action plan and budget and using the Plan

  • Consider ways to apply what you’ve leant back at your museum

  • Learn from other museums and discover what has worked for them

How does this session relate to Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard?

  • 2.1 An approved forward or business plan which covers the current and subsequent planning year

Session Leader

Vicky Dawson is a freelance museum & heritage consultant, currently engaged by SW Museum Development to provide Accreditation Technical Advice across the SW. She specializes in museum governance, operation and collections review and has a long record of championing the value of a robust forward/business plan to run and develop an organization.

Her long experience of working with museums of all sizes and governance types has influenced her approach to forward/business planning and the need for a practical, stepped approach to the task.
