About the Day
An informative and practical day for beginners, covering the basics of marketing in a museum setting.
Using case studies from the sector we will cover marketing essentials. Including understanding your audiences, articulating your offer, identifying opportunities to communicate what you do, creating effective content and discovering some of the most popular engagement tools used by museum marketers.
Who should attend?
Museum staff and volunteers who have limited marketing experience, and who would like a session on the basics. This session is aimed at beginners, and we don’t expect this to be suitable for existing Marketing Officers or Marketing Managers.
What will you learn?
After the day’s session you should:
- Have a better understanding of how to match potential audiences to your museum
- Feel more confident in ways to articulate your offer and communicate these
- Feel inspired to approach marketing your museum and exhibitions in new, more structured ways
- Have heard relevant case studies from the sector

Session Leader:
This session is led by Rachel Cartwright, who is the Digital Engagement Officer for South West Museum Development. Rachel has over 10 years experience in the cultural sector, starting out in libraries and archives at the University of Bath, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY, Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and the Royal College of Art, London. Following this Rachel worked in a commercial artist studio managing the archive and image licensing. Since living in the South West Rachel has worked as a Project Manager and Archivist. Including working for Bristol & Bath Cultural Destinations, a project with over 30 cultural partner organisations, to deliver a Digital Optimisation programme with training, practical implementation and support.
