Description

About the Day:

This session will provide inspiration and practical advice for developing projects with artists. Drawing on the learning from Muse: Makers in Museums, a project which enabled 8 small museums to work with artists, we will explore the many benefits of working with artists and how to do this successfully. You will hear from artist Dorcas Casey and Jackie Brooks of Bruton Museum about their involvement in Muse, and in the afternoon there will be practical activities to help you explore how to devise and plan a project.

Who should attend?

This course is anyone involved in museums who are interested in practical advice about working with artists, and the benefits this will bring to their museum.

What will you learn?

This course will:

  • Outline the benefits of museums and artists working together

  • Provide top-tips for running a successful project with an artist

  • Share the experiences of the Muse project

  • Outline practicalities including funding sources

  • Provide guidelines for planning your own project

How does this session relate to Arts Council England’s Accreditation Standard?

  • 8.3 To have a plan for developing your range of users

  • 9.1 To provide stimulating learning and discovery activities, including exhibitions and programmes based on your collections

  • 9.2 To communicate effectively with users and potential users through a range of access, marketing and promotional activities

Session Leader:

Susan Eddisford is Museum Development Officer for Devon and Rachel Bellamy is Community Heritage and Museums Development Officer for Somerset. In 2017 and 2018 they devised and delivered the Muse: Makers in Museums programme, funded by Arts Council England and Heritage Lottery Fund, in partnership with Somerset Art Works and Devon Guild of Craftsmen. This exciting and inspiring project enabled 8 predominantly volunteer-led museums across Devon and Somerset to work with an artist for the first time.
