South West : Hydrogen Economy - Issues and Opportunities

About this event

Book a place on our IEMA South West webinar, as we provide an introduction to the Hydrogen Economy and explore issues and opportunities relating to environmental management. This webinar will shine a light on challenges relating to safety in planning, design, and operations, and the need for a clear regulatory framework, with lessons learned from adjacent industries and technologies.

Hydrogen and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) will form a critical element of the UK’s pathway towards Net Zero 2050 and our commitments to the Paris Agreement. Hydrogen offers a solution to decarbonise the ‘hard-to-reach’ parts of our economy, such as heavy industry (steel, cement), transport (heavy vehicles, maritime, aviation), and heating (domestic and industrial); whilst also offering the potential for seasonal balancing to support peak winter demand.

Although there have been previous ‘false starts’, the recently published Energy White Paper and Ten Point Plan places hydrogen firmly at the centre of the UK decarbonisation efforts over the next 30 years. This is further underpinned by the rapid decline in renewable energy costs, the need to transition the Oil & Gas sector, and advances in technology.

In line with this, Government has committed to creating four industrial clusters that will include the deployment of 5GW of low-carbon (blue) hydrogen production by 2030, closely coupled to the development of large scale CCUS in two of the industrial clusters by 2025. Scotland’s recently published Hydrogen Policy Statement also sets an ambition to become a leading hydrogen nation, generating 5GW of renewable (green) and low-carbon hydrogen by 2030.

This session is ideal for environmental practitioners interested in new technology deployment and energy transition pathways. to gain a strong understanding of the hydrogen economy and its relationship to Net Zero emissions by 2050.
