Swadhinata Trust presents Bengali History Walk
MEETING POINT: Altab Ali Park, 11AM
The Banglatown walk and talk is aimed at anybody interested in Bengali migration and settlement in the East End of London. It is an opportunity to learn about the Bengali community’s history and heritage, and the lives of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences, values and customs. The experiences of Bengalis in the East End explores both the value of multiculturalism and the tensions it creates. The walk/talk will look at the legacy of the British Empire as migration from the colonies continued throughout the twentieth century.
The Swadhinata Trust is a secular Bengali heritage organisation set up in 2000 to raise youth awareness about Bengali history, culture and heritage by establishing resources for British Bengali community and the general public in the field of education, research and the creative arts. Based in Banglatown, the Trust organises a wide range of cultural events as well as producing educational literature. It carries out oral history projects and research to promote community cohesion across London and throughout the UK.
