Dark and starry night skies are a special part of the countryside, however buildings and roads emit light which has an impact on our views of the galaxy, wildlife and health. Swanscombe Peninsula is home to many endangered species and we want to study stars here and in the local area to prove how much of a dark oasis the Peninsula is, and how the wildlife could potentially be effected the blinding lights of a theme park!

For the star count 2022 we will be hosting a zoom event with guest speaker Dr Hilary Newport on Tuesday 22nd February. This will feature an introduction to the star count, exploring the reasons behind studying the stars, how to take part and the devastating impacts of light pollution.

The following week we are asking you to get involved by turning off your lights and turning up the stars! ⭐

This involves:

☆ Counting how many stars you can see between a section of stars in Orions belt 👀

☆ Sharing your photos on our social media pages with the hashtag #starcount and sharing to our social media pages 🌠
