Event description
Fellow Interintellect Taylor Pullinger explores collective cognition across scales from individual cells to far-flung humans on the internet

About this Event

"A neuron fires based on information it has received from its neuronal neighbors. At this local level things are relatively simple – to fire, or not to fire – practically a binary choice. However, when we combine billions of neurons, all making these types of choices simultaneously, into a human brain, what wonders emerge: rational thinking, creativity, emotion! It is through the interactions of these many simple information processing units that the mind is generated and with it the consciousness we associate with being human.

But what happens when we connect many human minds together? Would we create a super-consciousness as unknowable to each of us as our own decision-making is to individual neurons? Is this being Twitter or TikTok? When we get caught up in a wave of mass hysteria or mired in groupthink, would the super-mind feel angry or confused? What about the wisdom of crowds? What are the circumstances that bring out the best of our collective cognition? What can we create only if we work together?

Join us at this Interintellect Salon as we put our minds together to discuss collective cognition across scales, from individual cells cooperating to form an organism, to far-flung humans communicating on the internet (like us… so meta!)." - Salon Host Taylor Pullinger
