We’re back!
Launched in May 2025, Swindon Wordsmiths is an evening of spoken word poetry and comedy organised by Swindon people, for Swindon people. Whether you want to get up and perform, or sit back and watch, Swindon Wordsmiths has something for all poetry and comedy lovers to enjoy.
You'll find us at The Well at Abbey Meads Village Centre, North Swindon. Come join us for a night of spoken word, open mic, comedy and all-round great vibes.
Follow @torncurtainco and @swindonwordsmiths on Insta to stay up to date with event info.
Line-up
Swindon Wordsmiths is hosted by local comedian, Abbie Doyle. We'll have spoken word poetry from the current Swindon Mayor’s poet - and one of our producers - Rebecca Rocker. Plus we’ll be treated to a headline stand-up set from local comedy legend, Sam Michael.
Open-mic
There are five open-mic slots (5 mins for poets, 10 mins for comedians). Peformers can sign-up for in advance by emailing hello@torncurtain.co.uk. We'll confirm slots at least one month before the event. Open-mic performers do not need to buy tickets.

The heart behind it
Swindon Wordsmiths is a safe space for comedians, storytellers and poets to share their stories with humour and heart.
Many of the organising team are Christians, with a passion for encouraging creativity and conversation in the local community. The venue is a church, but Swindon Wordsmiths welcomes any/all expressions of faith.
We want to:
- Create a supportive environment for creativity and connection.
- Be a non-judgmental place to share stories and spark conversation.
- Give people a great night out, offering an alternative to the narrative that Swindon is ‘one of the worst places to live in the UK'!
- Showcase comedy/poetry that is engaging, entertaining and accessible.
- Celebrate ordinary people and their extraordinary stories.
- Platform voices that uplift, inspire, encourage and challenge with care.
Frequently asked questions
No. We won't be selling food or drink but you can bring your own. We will provide the glasses. There is a Tesco Express at the Abbey Meads Village Centre.
Yes, as long as you sign-up in advance by emailing hello@torncurtain.co.uk. We have five slots available and we'll let open-micers know at least two weeks before the event, via email, if they've got a spot.

We don't really know until people start talking! We do ask performers to keep material clean, where possible, as the venue is a church and children (12+) might be in the audience. We have a zero-tolerance policy for hate, discrimination and abuse. We ask all performers to provide trigger warnings.
We'll let you be the judge of that, but we obviously think so! We might have more tone shifts than the One Show but, whatever the style of storytelling, it's all about using words to create connections.
We want to make space for poets and comedians of all experience levels. That's why we have open-mic spots in the first half, and professional sets in the second. This is the best way we could think of to platform new voices and showcase professional performers all in one night.
We’re still working things out and listening to our audience but we are hoping to do 3-4 events each year.
