Swindon's Happy London Walking
Sat 25 March 2017, 08:00 – 18:00 GMT
A jolly two mile amble from Park Lane to the Palace of Westminster with friends, family, sandwiches and good cheer.
There’s a mobility friendly route too.
This may well be your first such outing so we aim to make everything as easy as a walk in the park.
!! UPDATE 24/03/2017 !!
Everything is in order and we've had final confirmation from the GLA that Parliament Sq can be used tomorrow.
We want to reiterate the need for people to be mindful of the Wednesday attacks in their behaviour.
There is a flower memorial by Carriage Gates (Parliament) and we encourage people to add flowers, wreaths, cards and messages to the existing remembrance site. Alternatively, please bring some other sign in honour of and solidarity with those that lost their lives.
We will be holding a minute's silence before our guest speakers begin.
We will march for peace and unity. Let us unite for London, unite for Britain and Unite for Europe.
Pick up points:
Here are the times, please aim to get to your choice of stop at the time below - approx ten minutes before the coach arrives - then a swift load and we're off.
When we are there - Brian and myself are to be given Hi-Vis vests and act as marshals. The Unite for Europe organisers have asked us to march in our coach groups - that's up to you however, do let me know if you plan to be elsewhere.
The route - still subject to change. Will be somewhere to leave flowers. We are confirmed as ending up Parliament Square where we'll listen to speakers.
Departure - it should all be over between 4 & 5pm. We've asked to be collected by the coach from Parliament Square. If you are not planning on returning with us, just let me know. When we are all accounted for we'll be off back to the same collection points approx 7-8pm.
There will be a toilet in the coach
About the march:
• What's the message?
We want to remain in the European Union!
We value the peace, friendships, relationships, rights, business & academic collaborations, economic prosperity and outward-looking attitude that European Union membership delivers; it's best for the UK.
• What can we achieve?
We can embolden our elected representatives. The vast majority of our MPs support our membership of the European Union, but they need to know that we still do too - and just how many votes there are in adopting a pro-EU position. There is a long, unpredictable, road ahead that Parliament will have some (hopefully much!) control over; with our vocal support, they can stop Brexit.
We can change minds. As the damage of Brexit reveals itself over the coming months, we can help sway public opinion with our demonstration of support for the European Union and all its benefits.
We can send a message of goodwill to our European friends and neighbours.
• Why 25th March 2017?
Unite for Europe is timed to coincide with the UK Government’s stated intention to trigger Article 50 by the end of March 2017. We anticipate that due legal and Parliamentary process will prevent this happening significantly sooner.
March 25th 2017 is the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, which established the European Economic Community.
Everybody who wants to must be able to attend this march. March 25th allows expats and those in more far-flung regions of the UK time to arrange their transport to London – there are many on their way! Additionally, if Unite for Europe were held sooner, the wintery weather of January and February would pose a risk to the success of the march.
• What's the route?
We will be marching to Parliament. The exact route will be finalised when we have an indication of the number of marchers attending. The start location will be advertised here, on the Unite for Europe website and Twitter account, and in the national press.
• What should I bring?
Colourful flags or banners! The more positive the better – let’s show our EU love!
Layers of clothing, including waterproofs. Wear blue and yellow! Snacks and (non-alcoholic) drinks.
If for whatever reason the event is cancelled a full refund including any fees will be issued
