Please join us for an evening of mob programming

Mob programming is a collaborative approach to software development, where the whole team works on the same thing, at the same time on the same computer. To quote Woody Zuill: “All the brilliant people working on the same thing, at the same time, in the same space, and on the same computer”. This workshop will give participants a taster of what it is like to program in this way.

The session will be a hands on coding kata that participants will work on collaboratively as a mob, working on one machine.

The set up will be one laptop and one large monitor per group, with groups of between 5 and 8 people. Groups can be multi-disciplinary, so developers, product owners, testers etc. are all welcome. No experience of coding is necessary. We can mix up the groups on the day, so there will be some coding knowledge within the team.

We hope a hands on mobbing session will give people real experience, and highlight the benefits the team can get out of it: limited WIP so increased flow, no knowledge silos, team alignment, increased collaboration etc. Participants will hopefully leave equipped with enough practical knowledge, that they will be confident experimenting with mobbing at their place of work.

The Swipii team are all really passionate about mob programming, something which we started as an experiment almost a year ago and are still doing on a daily basis now. Speaking to people out and about we realise that there is a lot of interest in mobbing but not a lot of chance to actually try it out, so hopefully this workshop will give you a chance.
