Sŵn Festival Music Industry Mixer - Industry Conference

10:00 Welcome To Sŵn Festival Conference. Sam Taylor (CMU) and Sŵn Festival Director Guto Brychen (Clwb Ifor Bach) kick-start the day and provide an overview of the conversations ahead.

10:20 Making Money From Music If an artist wants to give up the day job and focus on their music full time, they need to turn that music into revenue. CMU’s Chris Cooke provides an overview of all the key ways you can make money out of your music making and introduces the companies you might partner with as your business grows.

10:45 Building Momentum In The Streaming Age

You’ve written, recorded and released a track - great news! Now the hard work starts. We are joined by panel of experts to identify what you need to do before, during and after your release to stand out from the crowd, connect with key influencers, and keep people streaming long term.

11:15 Getting Played And Getting Paid

The songs you write and recordings you make can make money beyond the streaming services, with extra royalties due whenever your music is performed or played in public, or on radio and TV. Make sure you get every penny you are due! CMU’s Chris Cooke talks to PRS For Music and PPL about how you go about registering, protecting and monetising your music.

11:45 Break

12:00 Getting Started And Getting Noticed Tapping all the different revenue streams available to artists relies on building a fanbase. CMU’s Sam Taylor provides a concise guide to the modern music marketing toolkit, running through the tools and tactics the music industry uses when marketing artists, releases and shows.

12:20 Finding An Audience, Building A Fanbase

How can you find new fans? How can you use existing fans to grow your audience? And how can you turn passive listeners into engaged fans who will spend money to access more? We talk to a panel of experts about the tricky business of finding an audience and building a fanbase.

13:00 In Conversation: The Artist Business Model

As an artist’s career progresses and their business grows, they’ll need to better understand their fanbase, what opportunities lie ahead, and how they can capitalise on those opportunities. CMU’s Chris Cooke looks at the business partners who help artists with this process, and how the role of those business partners has evolved over the last decade.

13:30 Scaling Up: Developing Your Artist Business

You’ve released a bunch of tracks, played a string of shows, found an initial audience and you’re beginning to see results. What next? This is when business partners in the music industry start to play a key role. We talk to a panel of experts about the respective role labels, agents, publishers and others play at this crucial stage, and why the DIY ethos doesn’t really mean “do it yourself”.

14:00 LUNCH

15:00 The Pathways Into Music Guide

How can artists build long and sustainable careers in music? And how can music educators, music funders and the music industry better support new talent as they begin on that journey? CMU's Chris Cooke launches the first in a series of Pathways Into Music guides, breaking down the career of a frontline artist into ten steps, and looking at the people and organisations - locally, nationally and globally - who support them along the way.

15:20 The Local Music Community: Mentors & Peers

As soon as artists embark on the ten step journey outlined in the new Pathways Into Music guide they will need support. The traditional music industry probably won’t get actively involved until about step four. Prior to that mentors and peers in the local music community play a key role. This panel looks at how local music communities support that journey and how talent can best access the support on offer where they live.

16:00 Sustainable Music Careers: Knowledge & Networks

Enjoying a long-term career in music - whether as a frontline artist, portfolio career musician or behind the scenes in the industry - requires building and utilising a personal professional network. But what does that even mean? How do you go about building such a network - locally, nationally and globally - and what kinds of people do you need to connect with? Our panel discusses!

16:40 Accessing Funding

Funding is available for new talent to help them develop their music, grow their audience and build a sustainable business. But the challenge can be working out which funds are right at what stage in an artist's career - and what you need to be able to show to access the money on offer. We talk to key funders about how to navigate funding options.

17:10 - 17:40 Closing Conversation

Wrapping up the day’s proceedings, CMU’s Chris Cooke talks to special guests who have been there and done it all about the highs and lows of their careers to date, how the business of music has evolved over the decades, and how to stay motivated in a challenging and ever-changing industry.

Sŵn Festival isn’t just about giving live music a platform, it is proud to support young people looking to make it in the music industry. We’ve partnered with University of South Wales to deliver a two-day industry event curated by Complete Music Update (CMU). The event brings together artists, the music community and students for a two-day programme to inspire those that are looking to develop a career in the music industry. Expect panel discussions, Q&A’s and presentations from over 20 industry professionals who will share their experiences and advice on how to build and sustain your career in music.

The Sŵn Festival Music Industry Mixer is organised by Clwb Ifor Bach and the University of South Wales, curated by Complete Music Update (CMU), and is supported by funding from Welsh Government.
