Symposium of International Auctioneers

About this event

This Symposium will encompass a question and answer session with four auctioneers.

There are four invited participants, Charles Shreve, Olivier Stocker, Dieter Michelson and Sébastian Delcampe.

This panel of international auctioneers will answer questions on the subject of how the philatelic market is presently, including how it has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the last couple of years.

Each person will bring their personal perspective of the situation. Olivier Stocker will speak about the UK and Far East markets, Charles Shreve concerning the market in the USA, Dieter Michelson about the market in Europe, and Sébastien Delcampe will enlighten us as to any differences he has observed in the online auction marketplace.

The event will be open to all.

Olivier Stocker

Olivier D. Stocker has been the Chairman and CEO of Spink & Son Ltd since 2005. As an independent firm, Spink continues to uphold a long tradition of expertise and client service whilst also being forward-thinking and dynamic. They offer a broad range of services to the collector or to those seeking advice on disposing of single items or a collection.

Charles Shreve

Charles F. Shreve started collecting stamps in 1966 and was soon working at a local stamp shop on Saturdays to pay for his purchases. While still a teenager, he became an apprentice auction lot describer for Roger Koerber Auctions in Southfield, Michigan. He joined Sotheby Parke Bernet Stamp Auction Company in 1977 and left in 1980 to lead Steve Ivy Philatelic Auctions Inc., ultimately becoming a partner in Ivy, Shreve and Mader, one of the largest stamp auction houses in the country. He left to form Shreves Philatelic Galleries Inc. in 1994 and oversaw its sale to Spink and Son Ltd. of London in 2007, becoming president of Spink Shreves Galleries. Since 2012, Shreve has been a director of Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries Inc. with responsibility for its international division.

Using modern marketing techniques, Shreve is credited with essentially revolutionizing the way rare stamps were presented and sold at high-profile, international auctions. He also was the first stamp auctioneer to conduct his auctions live on the internet, making stamps accessible to collectors around the world.

Dieter Michelson

Dieter Michelson has been active without interruption since 1982 in executive positions with companies in various fields of philately. In 1981 Michelson joined the newly-established stamp wholesaler Philagentur GmbH. A year later he took over the management and led the company, through internal growth and the acquisition of competitors, to become a market-leading German distributor of the new issues of postal administrations from around the world.

In 2002 he additionally took over the management of the auction house of Heinrich Köhler in Wiesbaden. From 2009 Michelson was responsible for the stamp dealing part of the American ‘Spectrum Group International’ until the now completed acquisition. Dieter Michelson was for many years active on the boards of the German Stamp Dealers’ Association (APHV) and the International Federation of Stamp Dealers’ Associations (IFSDA). At the same time he was President of the Federal Association of German Stamp Auctioneers (BDB) from 2005 to 2008. Since 2009 Michelson has been a member of the Consilium Philatelicum, Bonn, an institution for the promotion of philately in Germany.

Sébastian Delcampe

Sébastien Delcampe is the CEO, Owner and General Manager of, the famous online marketplace for collectors, which he founded in 2000.
