Overview
ABOUT THE CUISINE
Syrian cuisine is a vibrant reflection of the country’s rich history and cultural diversity. Fresh herbs, spices, grains, and vegetables are combined with slow-cooked stews, rice dishes, and freshly baked breads to create meals full of flavour and heart. From zesty salads to comforting stews and aromatic rice, Syrian food is made to bring people together, celebrating generosity, hospitality, and the joy of sharing home-cooked meals.
ABOUT THE CHEF
A message from Chef Faten:
“My name is Faten, I am from the Syrian city of Homs. I was born in Homs and lived there all my life. Homs is famous for Palmyra, which is an ancient city dating back to the Neolithic period.
I am married with three children and I am a housewife. I have been living in the UK for three and a half years.
I enjoy reading children’s stories which helps me with my English. In Syria I enjoyed playing tennis.
My Mum taught me to cook after I married. I married when I was young. I used to call my Mum to get her to help me with recipes. But sometimes when she wasn’t home, I had to cook by myself. I remembered ingredients and the taste and I experimented until I was happy.
I enjoy working with Migrateful because I have made new friends and I like cooking and trying different foods.”

THE CLASS FORMAT
Our cookery classes are family-style - meaning everyone works together to prepare the dishes as a team.
While you’ll be asked to choose one dish to focus on, you’ll have the opportunity to move around the kitchen, help with other dishes, and learn from each recipe. It’s a fun, social, and collaborative way to cook! At the end of the class, you’ll sit down with the chef, class facilitator and volunteers to enjoy the delicious meal you’ve created together.
