“I wasn’t going to let this little diagnosis spoil our fun
When his little life had just begun”
Ever felt like the moment your child is born, the world starts speaking a language you never learned? I am Oneness Sankara and I’m writing a new solo performance which follows me – a Black British mother as I navigate my life after my son’s Down Syndrome diagnosis - or as I like to call it, T21.
From awkward family parties to chaotic soft plays, hospital corridors to school system showdowns, I will invite you into the raw, poetic, and at times hilariously uncomfortable reality of parenting a child who experiences the world differently.
T21 Alchemy will be both deeply personal and boldly political - unearthing the stories rarely given stage time, particularly those of Black disabled children and the families that raise them.
My plan is to tell this story through spoken word, character work, intimate storytelling and moments of satirical bite… Somewhere between a sermon, a stand-up set, and a love letter you were never meant to read, I’m planning a story of acceptance, community, and what it means to choose visibility when invisibility would be easier.
But first I need YOUR help….
Please join me for an online workshop – an informal discussion, a sharing of stories thoughts, and opinions…
Let’s have a conversation…. and help me write the script.
We will create a safe space together, with the aim to:
· Gather ideas to change the narrative that relate to disabilities
· To celebrate the roles that care-givers play in the lives of our society
· Harness the power of the arts to make big changes happen
