Session Outcomes

• To consider the SEND code of practice and the Devon Graduated Response Tool and the implications for the role of teaching assistants

• To build and develop practical strategies to support pupils within the four areas of need.

• To consider how we manage our own resilience when working with pupils with complex needs.

Programme Summary

This training will seek to build understanding of the duties and responsibilities schools face to uphold the SEND Code of Practice. We will look together at the national picture, focusing down on the use of the Devon Graduated Response Toolkit to consider how this can support us in our day-to-day.

We will look at the workings of a pupils brain and spend time reflecting on how the fight, flight or freeze response can be supported by trusted adults. We will consider the power of building positive relationships, being specific in our praise and looking to promote resilience for the pupils who have barriers to their learning. We will also consider the value and importance of how we can keep our own mental health healthy.
