Event description

Description

The 2018 Ralph Melville Memorial Lecture is a prestigious annual public lecture sponsored by the Tropical Agriculture Association (TAA), in memory of Ralph Melville, an eminent agriculturalist and a founder of the Association. This year's event will be hosted in partnership with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Agriculture and Food for Development, which seeks to bring together UK Parliamentarians concerned with agriculture, nutrition and wider food security in the developing world. This cross-party group aims to engender progressive and informed debate within Westminster and beyond by bridging the gap between policy makers and practitioners in the field whilst also giving a voice to the 700 million smallholder farmers worldwide.

The lecture will be held at Portcullis House, Houses of Parliament, London and delivered by Dr Elizabeth Warham FRSB. The title will be 'Game Changing Technologies for the Future Farm, with reference to Developing Countries. She will explore the rapid development of new agricultural technologies and what this means for sustainable farming and global access to food in the future.

Elizabeth is Head of the Agri-Tech Organisation for the UK Department for International Trade, which champions the role of Agri-Tech in strengthening agri-business in UK exports and investment, and helping drive sustainable intensification of agriculture to provide global access to sufficient, safe and healthy food. Previously as Head of the food, water and environment issues team in the Government Office for Science, she provided support to the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and led a review of how the Department of Health manages and uses science to inform the development of policies. In the former Department of Trade and Industry Technology Programme she worked closely with technological sectors and their user industries in programme delivery. In DfID, she managed research programmes to develop appropriate technologies for different agricultural production systems in low and middle-income countries (Africa, Asia, Latin America and Caribbean). Her career started in plant sciences at the International Centre for Wheat and Maize Improvement (CIMMYT) in Mexico.

The event will be opened and chaired by Lord Cameron of Dillingham, Chairman of the APPG on Agriculture and Food for Development and introduced by Dr. Andrew Bennett CMG, President of TAA. Participants are invited to drinks and light refreshment following the lecture. Entry to the lecture will be free but contributions to TAA's charitable Tropical Agriculture Award Fund (TAAF) would be much appreciated.

Please print out your ticket and bring it with you to facilitate your entry through the security checks, enter via Gate 4 at Portcullis House and allow 20-30 minutes to clear security.
