Tackling Engagement – Core Programme Day 2

N.B – A pre-requisite of attending this course is that you MUST have attended Tackling Engagement Day 1 with IntraQuest prior to attending.
This acclaimed programme has been run across Greater Manchester and beyond for the last three years, and has seen great results in terms of behavioural change in service users. It is applicable to anyone who works with hard-to-reach clients and customers and will give you valuable skills to use in connecting with people and building positive relationships.
This 1 day course enables participants to fully explore their own working practices, attitudes and barriers to engagement, whilst developing the skills and resources necessary for overcoming such. Following on from day 1 where connection and empathy was explored, day 2 is designed to take a closer look at the barriers created by communication styles, body language and psycho-geography, whilst providing participants with the opportunity to develop key skills and therapeutic techniques in relation to enhancing engagement. We then move on to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to motivate clients towards positive change with minimal resistance and maximum autonomy. The foundations are also set for further training in the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Skills if required (offered separately as a follow-up course).
Participants will leave this training having achieved the following:
• Demonstrate an awareness of how their own communication style, plus agency requirements e.g. ’tools of the trade’, uniforms, offices etc. can both inhibit and enhance the engagement process.
• Demonstrate their ability to overcome ‘natural barriers’ to engagement through the use of enhanced communications skills (language use, psycho-geography, body language & tonality).
• Demonstrate their ability to build rapport with difficult client groups through the use of basic counselling skills, such as mirroring, reflecting, paraphrasing & conveying empathy.
• Demonstrate their knowledge of evidenced based practice around behaviour and behaviour change, in particular how and why negative cycles of behaviour are developed and maintained.
• Demonstrate awareness around how current thinking & working practice can increase dependency on services and resistance towards change.
• Demonstrate their ability to motivate others using Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills and techniques, promoting self-responsibility and autonomy in their clients.
• Show understanding of ‘resistance’ as being the responsibility of both the client and practitioner and demonstrate their ability to minimise resistance using basic counselling skills and MI techniques.
• Demonstrate their ability to promote self-challenge through the use of basic cognitive behavioural techniques i.e. Socratic Questioning.
