The Equality Trust and Just Fair are delighted to invite London local authorities, councillors, and politicians to a workshop on Section 1 of the Equality Act 2010, the socio-economic duty.
Poverty in the UK remains a significant issue, with 14.4 million people living in poverty. England’s highest poverty rates are in London.
COVID-19 has foregrounded existing socio-economic inequalities and is disproportionately affecting people who are Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME), disabled, and/or on the lowest incomes.
In recovering from COVID-19, we have the opportunity to rebuild a more equal society. The socio-economic duty offers a powerful tool for public authorities to actively consider the way in which their policies and decisions can address inequalities.
This workshop will take place on Monday 12 October 6-7:15 pm as part of London Challenge Poverty Week and will be part of the marking of the 10th anniversary of the Equality Act 2010.
The online workshop will take place via Zoom, and we will share the Zoom dial-in details the day before the session. A short briefing can be found here.

We know that as inequality rises or falls, our communities are impacted across the spectrum; people in more equal societies live longer, have better mental health and have better chances for a good education, regardless of their background. Community life is stronger where the income gap is narrower, children do better at school, people trust each other more, there is less violence and rates of imprisonment are lower. More equal societies are better for everyone.
