In the next impactful instalment of the CILIPS #WINspiration series, SLG Scotland are delighted to welcome award-winning novelist, playwright and performer Alan Bissett.
Alan's novels often centre on the stories of working-class Scottish teenagers, with particular appeal to those normally alienated by books, and in 2023 his first non-fiction work Lads: A Guide to Consent and Respect offered a ground-breaking toolkit to help teenagers navigate relationships, deal with negative online influences and challenge toxic masculinity. School libraries across Scotland and beyond have been inspired by Lads to engage and educate their young learners on these challenging themes, harnessing the unique role of our sector in promoting positive role models and more broadly building a better world through libraries and literature. In the spirit of WINspiration, this event will show that tackling the scourge of toxic masculinity is not exclusively 'women's work' but rather something all library staff and their communities can play a part in, complementing and reinforcing our profession's vital contribution to positive social change.
Since his first short stories were published in 1999, Alan has published and performed extensively across Scotland and beyond, with recognition for his work including the Glenfiddich Scottish Writer of the Year 2012, Fringe First Winner 2016, Best Short Documentary San Francisco International Film Festival 2010 and an Honorary Doctorate from Stirling University for Outstanding Contribution to Scottish Culture in 2016.
