Tai Chi Notes for Beginners

Please read the following paragraphs carefully if you're new to my classes.

1) Chi Kung. Chi Kung is a system of relaxing exercises that are easy to learn yet give similar benefits to practising Tai Chi. This means that you can immediately take away whatever you remember and practice daily on your own to benefit further from the exercises.

2) Tai Chi. Comprising slow flowing movements that strengthen the legs improving flexibility and balance, by practising tai chi you will also improve your mobility, reduce blood pressure, increase bone density, increase strength and range of motion of joints, improve knee strength, reduce levels of stress and improve your immunity. Tai chi is suitable for all ages and all levels of fitness.

3) Medical Treatments and General Health. Tai chi is suitable for people at all levels of fitness. If you have any injuries or ailments, you are advised to be careful with stretching, touching or putting any sort of load on sensitive areas while participating in the class. Additionally, you know your own range of movement and while you may become more flexible through attending the classes, please do not feel that you have to carry out the movements to the same degree that the teacher or other students may achieve.

In terms of physical activity levels, if you can walk with a bag of shopping, then you should be able to practice the exercises. Of course, if there are any exercises that you feel you cannot perform, you are welcome to sit out for a while.

4) Chi/Qi/Internal Energy. The concept of chi or internal energy may be mentioned during the class. This is merely to give you an understanding of why you are encouraged to move in a particular fashion and to give you a little background to how the movements were developed.

5) Structure of the Class. Typically, there will be a warm up routine incorporating loosening of the ligaments, exercising the muscles and stretching. This will be followed by various relaxing exercises including Chi Kung movements. Finally, you will be taught a basic tai chi form.

For more information, contact Darren Yap on 07977 135506.

COVID Notes

The room is a squash court and there is little ventilation so mask wearing is advised.

  • Ventilation - there is a nearby door and windows which will be opened and there is movement of air due to the design of the squash court with its fixed air vents. Heaters are used so you won't get cold.
  • I won't enquire about your vaccine status nor ask you to wear masks but there will be vulnerable adults present. This is why only 12 are permitted.
  • I am fully vaccinated and am happy to wear a mask if asked.
  • If you are experienced symptoms of Covid-19 (persistent cough, temperature, fatigue etc) or have been in contact with someone with Covid-19, please do not come. If you've already bought a ticket, a refund will be given.

Refund Policy

I prefer to give a voucher permitting free access to the next class that you book.
