About this event

This FREE 12 week course is for the over 50s and is sutiable for all abilities and beginners. During the course, you will learn basic tai chi hand and foot movements as well as basic fan movements. You will learn the first steps of Tai Chi Kung Fu Fan, a form that was first created for the opening ceremony of the Chinese Olympics in 2008, when thousands performed Tai Chi Kung Fu Fan together.

This FREE 12-week course is possible through funding support from the London Borough of Waltham Forest Community Chest fund. Places on the course are limited, so priority will be given to those who can attend all or majority of the 12 classes.

Clinical and other medical research evidence on the health benefits of tai chi for all age groups is ever-growing. For older adults (the over 50s), tai chi is proven to improve balance and coordination, thereby helping to prevent falls. Benefits also include sharpened mental focus, increased lung capacity, stronger core muscles and limbs, and profound calm and relaxation. It is also considered to be "meditation in motion".

At the end of the 12-week course, you have the option to continue learning the fan form through joining a regular paid-for class with your teacher and joining a second tai chi fan class with Dao Lu.

Classes will have the following format

1 hour exercise, 30 minutes tea and health chat
