About this event
What's it all about?
Tailfin Detours is a brand-new, community-focused bikepacking experience designed to celebrate freedom, self-navigation, and the thrill of charting your own course. Forget fixed routes and rigid itineraries—Detours puts the adventure in your hands, challenging you to reach a shared overnight destination, your way.
We're proud to be in partnership with A Cycling, the team behind Gritfest and Battle on the Beach, to bring you this first of its kind event in the UK.
Who is it for?
You don't need to be an experienced bikepacker to join - we even have kit rental packages and demo bikes available. So whether you're a seasoned ultra-distance rider looking for a new challenge or a confident cyclist ready to try bikepacking for the first time, there's a place for you. You need to be able to ride the minimum route of 70km per day.
The beauty of self-navigation means you control your own adventure: ride efficiently for speed, or take the scenic route and rack up maximum checkpoint points. If you can handle the distance and love the idea of charting your own course, this weekend is for you.
The Event
Friday: Camping
- Start the weekend early with optional camping at the start line, included in your ticket price.
Saturday: Adventure Begins
- You'll depart from a shared start point and head toward our event hub at Fforest Fields, a fully-equipped overnight basecamp.
- You'll plot your own route, including a compulsory manned checkpoint and as many of the 9 optional checkpoints as you dare to reach.
- The more checkpoints you visit, the more points you earn. Arrive after the cut-off, and points are deducted.
- Biggest detour wins.
Celebrate at the Camp
Prizes, storytelling, food, drink, community. The overnight location includes showers, toilets, charging facilities, a shop, bar, and shelters in case of bad weather. Evening entertainment TBA but may include live music or fireside talks.
Sunday: Ride Back Together
A relaxed return ride (non-competitive) back to the start location. Go solo or roll as a group.
Pricing Structure
We believe bikepacking should be accessible to everyone, regardless of financial circumstances.
To build a truly diverse and inclusive community on the trails, we've created three pricing tiers: a standard rate that covers event costs, a reduced rate for those facing financial barriers, and a higher rate that helps fund accessible spots for other riders*. Please choose the one most applicable to you.
*Reduced-rate spaces are limited. We will release more if we receive lots of 'Supporter Rate' ticket entries.
Add-ons
Add-ons are available when purchasing your ticket for the following:
Dinner & Breakfast - Leave your stove at home as we provide an evening buffet (hot) meal (vegetarian and vegan available) on Saturday night, plus a hot breakfast on Sunday morning.
£30 | This will be a popular option.
Tailfin Kit Package - Don't have any bikepacking gear yet? No problem, rent a complete setup from us. If you decide to keep it by the end of the weekend, the value of the add-on will be removed from the overall purchase price.
£50 *limited availability, so act fast.
Demo Bike Hire - Cannondale will be present at the start line with the latest Topstone or Scalpel HTs available to rent for the weekend.
£50 | Book in advance. Limited availability.

Supporters Welcome
Families, friends, and supporters are encouraged to join us at the overnight location. Whether cheering from the sidelines, sharing a meal, or pitching up for the evening’s festivities, Detours is a weekend for everyone, not just riders.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, all checkpoint information will be sent at least a week in advance to allow time to plan your route.
Detours can be ridden on any style of bike. Here at Tailfin we feel that the best bike for bikepacking is the bike you already own and so the same applies for Detours! We have chosen checkpoint locations that can be accessed both by road and off-road.
The full kit list will be sent with the welcome pack but at the very least you will be asked to carry a shelter, sleep kit, spare clothes and first aid. The things most of us will take on a bikepacking trip.
Yes, the location of the start and finish (TBC) will have secure car parking for you to leave vehicles.
We will be providing route planning tutorials and hints and tips to maximise your enjoyment of the route in the coming months through email and video.
Absolutely you can! We want Detours to be challenging but above all fun and rewarding. If you want to ride a route together that's fine by us.
No kit? No worries. We are offering an additional add-on to try out a range of Tailfin bikepacking equipment. Come and see what the fuss is all about.
