Event description

Taith Feicio Cwm Gwendraeth 2020 ~ Gwendraeth Valley Tour Cycle Ride 2020

Following the success of previous years the Gwendraeth Valley Tour is back for a 5th year!

It will again be a (mostly) non-competitive event (!) that we hope will cater for everyone, from the very keen cyclists that want the challenge of completing Hilly Hell, to those that want a more leisurely cycle, as well as a more sedate route for our loyal walkers!

With each of the cycle routes starting, looping through and finishing in the village – it’s a spectacle in itself, therefore spectators are very welcome – bring your flags, hooters, bells….! The more noise the better.

We will once again be remembering Will Thomas during the event, who sadly passed away in 2016 at the age of 16. Will was a keen cyclist and supported the Gwendraeth Valley Tour a number of times and was the first cyclist to cross the finishing line on the first ever Hilly Hell in 2014!

We thank you in advance for your support.

The Routes:

Route 1 – ‘Hilly Hell’ (53 miles)

This is the most challenging of the 3 routes covering the entire upper and lower Gwendraeth Valleys taking in some breath taking views and lung busting climbs!

The route is 53 miles long and includes 7 steep challenging climbs totalling almost 5,500ft!

The route starts and ends in Llangyndeyrn, and also loops back into the village at mile 13 and 37 allowing riders to re-hydrate and re-fuel.

Route 2 – Gwendraeth Valley Loops (31 miles)

This is a 31 mile route which incorporates 3 moderate climbs totalling 2,224ft for the entire route.

The route leaves Llangyndeyrn, heading up the valley towards Porthyrhyd to Drefach, Mynydd-cerrig, Bancffosfelen back into the village at mile 12 before heading to Ferryside, Kidwelly and Meinciau and returning to finish in Llangyndeyrn.

Route 3 – ‘Walk the Gwendraeth’ (6.5 miles)

This route is 6.5 miles with 2 climbs totalling 650ft.

Leaving Llangyndeyrn the route heads up the Gwendraeth Fach valley towards Cwmisfael, crosses over the Gwendraeth Fach River, and then back down the other side of the Valley, primarily on single lane country roads.

The route follows the perimeter of the reservoir that was planned by the Swansea Water Corporate in 1963, however the villagers of Llangyndeyrn fought and won their battle to save the valley from being drowned.
