Description

TALK: A PERSONAL ASAFO HISTORY // PETER ADLER
Saturday 7th September // 4pm
The Gallery of Everything
4 Chiltern Street
London W1 [ MAP ]

To coincide with the current exhibition ASAFO, The Gallery of Everything is proud to present an informal talk by collector and author of Asafo!: African Flags of the Fante, Peter Adler, who will discuss his 30 year history with the material.

Referencing the flags in the exhibition, the talk will explore the proverbs, myths, and traditions that influenced their designs. Taking place on Saturday 7th September, this is a rare opportunity to discover more about these important cultural artefacts from one of the world’s leading authorities on the subject.

The event is free, although spaces are limited.

ASAFO

In the 17th century, on the coast of what is now modern-day Ghana, the Fante people developed a new tradition, commencing a visual practice today considered as one of the most vivid and celebratory of 20th century Africa.

These are Asafo flags: “asa” meaning war, “fo” meaning people. They are symbols and allegories, conjured from folk tales and proverbs across the regions.

Asafo flags have long inspired artists, curators and designer. The works on display at The Gallery of Everything feature vintage flags from a number of key collections, including that of author and enthusiast Peter Adler.
