Talk and film: Professor Gavin Schaffer introduces The Governess

About this Event

The event:

An introduction by Professor Gavin Schaffer followed by a screening of The Governess written and directed by Sandra Goldbacher. Set in England between the Georgian and Victorian eras, a young Sephardic Jewish woman is offered the job of nanny for the gentile Cavendish family on the Isle of Skye. When Rosina Da Silva (Minnie Driver) changes her name to Mary Blackchurch to take the job, she is quickly taken in by the family as one of their own. But things become complicated as Mary discovers the experiments Mr Cavendish (Tom Wilkinson) is conducting. Cavendish is close to discovering how to develop photographic images, and as he and Mary start working together on the project, they become romantically involved. The film was shot on location at Brodick Castle in North Ayrshire, Wrotham Park in Hertfordshire, and London. Interiors were filmed at the Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.

Gavin Schaffer is Professor of Modern British History at the University of Birmingham.  He is a social and cultural historian and the author of numerous books and articles on themes relating to immigration and racism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He spent several years researching the place of race in science, which led to his 2008 monograph, Racial Science and British Society. He recently completed a major book on race relations and the media, looking in detail at television's attempts to deal with racial issues on television and radio in the 1960s and 1970s.
