About this event

  • Event lasts 30 minutes

Discover more about the Order of St John, St John Ambulance and the history of Clerkenwell at our free Ten-Minute Talk and Tea events. Tea and biscuits provided.

While International Coffee Day officially falls on 1st October, at St John’s Gate, we all agree that coffee is worth celebrating on any day of the year. Not only does it provide essential fuel for the staff and volunteers based in the Museum, but its scent is woven deep into the fabric of the building... Join us to discover how 300 years ago, Richard Hogarth, a man of words, wit, and as we now see, excellent taste(!), established a coffeehouse here in the Gate’s East Tower.

This is a free, relaxed event. Drop-ins are welcome, or you can pre-register through Eventbrite. The event will take place in the Museum Galleries which are on ground level with step-free access throughout.

The Museum of the Order of St John tells the unique story of an ancient religious military Order, from its origins caring for sick pilgrims in eleventh century Jerusalem, through to its modern-day role with St John Ambulance, the international first aid charity.
