A fascinating talk about the history of the present day Royal Hotel by David Lovell, researcher, followed by a special guided tour by Head receptionist Margaret Lovell who has worked for Brend Hotels for 43 years. It is only one of two grade listed buildings in the town, the other being Bideford’s Long Bridge.
Come and experience David's presentation on the history of the building from 1688, when it was built by Mr John Davie, a wealthy merchant who made his money importing tobacco to becoming the Royal Hotel, up to the present day, when it still trades as such.
The talk is followed by a rare opportunity to experience Margret's tour of the unexpected and hidden places, taking the group around the hotel pointing out things mentioned in the presentation.
This event is aimed at adults but older children who are interested in local history are very welcome.
Donation of £2 per person will be collected at the door on the day.
This event is part of Bideford Bay Creatives' 'Way of the Wharves' project, a one year community project researching and celebrating historical and contemporary activities and life on the Wharves at East the Water, Barnstaple Street,Torrington St and area.
