TALK: Brighton Waste House - case study of collaboration & rethinking space
2nd May 2013
2.30 - 3.15pm
Freegle, Cat Fletcher
Presentation and Q&A covering the challenges, barriers and joys of being part of a pioneering and innovative project – The House that Kevin Built.
The concept is based on the premise that there is no such thing as waste, just stuff in the wrong place. The project is a cross sector collaboration between Faculty Arts at University of Brighton, Brighton and Hove City Council, Brighton City College, Freegle, private sector companies (architects, structural engineers, builders, renewable energy suppliers) and more. It is also pioneering how an architect designed, low carbon, affordable home can be built by reusing waste materials. Cat’s role on the project is to procure the waste materials - which are being stored in abandoned or unused space around the city.
About Cat Fletcher:
Cat Fletcher is one of the hundreds of volunteers that founded Freegle UK, a free online reuse service in almost 400 communities in the UK. People give away their unwanted goods and others locally make use of that stuff-which reduces waste, extends the life of goods, redistributes wealth and enables resourcefulness on a grand scale with over 1.4 million end users. Last month 825 tonnes of goods were freegled in the UK. Cat is also working with the University of Brighton to build an architect designed, affordable and fabulous house all made from so called waste. She sources the materials for the project that may have otherwise been discarded from construction sites, tradesmen, businesses and ordinary people -proving that there is no such thing as waste - just stuff in the wrong place. She collaborates with the public, private and charity sectors to accelerate resourcefulness, community resilience and sustainability.
Don’t throw it out. There is no out!
