Event description

Description

''I first travelled to Istanbul 30 years ago - and was immediately enraptured. This metropolis has been a cornerstone of the most powerful of civilisations - and has fuelled and dashed the dreams of women and men across millennia… As Istanbul races up the modern political agenda, new archaeology is allowing us, for the first time, to piece together the full story of a brilliant and a brutal, history-making settlement, inhabited since 6000 BCE.'

Join award-winning historian, author and broadcaster, Bettany Hughes, as she discusses her latest book, Istanbul, a Tale of Three Cities.

Leighton House Museum provides a fitting backdrop for this fascinating talk. Frederic, Lord Leighton, eminent Victorian artist and P.R.A was an avid traveller and his house responds to his eclectic tastes. It showcases objects and decorative details from around the world, including an extraordinary collection of Islamic tiles and Turkish ceramics.

Doors open at 6:30pm for a drinks reception; ticket price includes access to the house. Copies of the book will be on sale and the author will be available for book signing after the talk.

Tickets are non-refundable; for further information please contact Leighton House Museum on museums@rbkc.gov.uk
