Event description

Description

Part of the Berlin-London: The Lost Photographs of Gerty Simon Event Series

Gerty Simon was both a chronicler and a representative of 'Weimar Culture' - that (in)famous flowering of progressive, modernist and cutting-edge arts and sciences in 1920s Germany, with Berlin at its centre. Dr Jochen Hung gives a critical introduction to the history of the Weimar Republic and the era that shaped Simon and her sitters. He also traces the historical development of the notion of 'Weimar Culture' itself and the role émigrés like Simon played in it.

About the speaker:

Dr Jochen Hung is Assistant Professor of Cultural History at the University of Utrecht and has published widely about interwar culture, including the co-edited volume Beyond Glitter and Doom. The Contingency of the Weimar Republic (2012).
