Event description

Description

Tracing the extraordinary stylistic development of El Greco, and concentrating on the latter half of his career – spent in Toledo – Siân Walters examines paintings which are still in their original locations, such as The Burial of Count Orgaz and The Disrobing of Christ. Their mystical, avant-garde appearance belies a variety of surprising influences, and she enquires to what extent they can be seen as reflections of the cultural, religious and socioeconomic climate of the city in the early 17th century.

This is the 1st lecture in a season of talks focusing on Spanish painting from the 16th to 20th centuries. You might also like to consider these lectures:-
