Frances Spalding is an art historian, critic and biographer. She specialises in twentieth-century British art and, with her biographies of Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, is also regarded as an authority on Bloomsbury. Her talk is in support of the Fry Art Gallery.

The Fry Art Gallery, Saffron Walden, is a public art gallery dedicated to collecting and displaying work by the Great Bardfield artists and others living in North West Essex.These include Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious, Michael Rothenstein, Kenneth Rowntree, John Aldridge, Keith Vaughan, Michael Ayrton and John Bellany. The Gallery, which is entirely voluntarily managed, is an ACE accredited museum and registered charity, open between April and October each year.
