Event description

Description

In this talk based on his new book ‘Modernists and Mavericks: Bacon, Freud, Hockney and the London Painters’, art critic Martin Gayford discusses the development of painting in London from the Second World War to the 1970s, focusing on the story of interlinking friendships, shared experiences and artistic concerns among a number of acclaimed artists, including Frank Auerbach, Gillian Ayres, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud and David Hockney.

Timed to coincide with the Tate’s current exhibition ‘All too Human: Bacon, Freud and a century of painting life’ and drawing on first-hand interviews and previously unpublished material, he teases out the threads connecting these individuals’ lives, and demonstrates how painting thrived against the backdrops of Soho bohemia in the 1940s and 1950s and ‘Swinging London’ in the 1960s.

There will be a book-signing and wine reception following the talk. Modernists & Mavericks is published by Thames & Hudson.
