Overview

Learn about GROW; a money coaching model that provides a powerful framework for Money Guiders to have productive conversations with clients.

It’s hard to talk money.

The fear of getting it wrong, appearing judgmental, can get in the way of having these conversations – even when it’s your job to do so.

GROW is a simple yet powerful coaching model that provides a framework for Money Guiders to have productive money conversations with clients.

GROW is action orientated. It’s designed to help people set goals, solve problems and make decisions.

GROW also helps clients think about what they want to achieve and why, and – importantly – come up with their own ideas on how they can bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be.

Importantly, this session will address that large numbers of people in Wales have a negative perception of their finances. Research shows that feeling low makes it hard to manage money, causing a cycle of low mental and financial wellbeing. This session is aimed at providing a framework to help Money Guiders break that cycle – and what better time than during Talk Money Week 2025.

This online training session will cover:

• Introduction to GROW

• How to use GROW as a framework for to have productive money conversations.

• Questions to ask at each stage of GROW.

• A case-study activity applying the theory to real-world situations.

How to show up and get the most out of this training session:

This is an interactive online training session. This may include polls, quizzes and breakout rooms, aimed at enhancing the learning experience for everyone – yourself, your fellow attendees and the host. Please ensure you show up fully focussed and ready to interact with the host and other attendees for the 90-minute duration of this training session. It helps the host to see who they’re working with. To help with this, we encourage cameras on, where possible.

The Money Guiders Programme

Money Guiders is a programme run by MaPS, which seeks to help money guidance practitioners improve their knowledge, skills and confidence. Everything that the Money Guiders programme offers centres around the Money Guidance Competency Framework - it's there to help you better understand the full breadth and depth of money related issues that fall outside of the regulated financial advice service sector - the things you talk to your customers about.

Before attending the session, you could spend some time considering the challenges you face in your work, specifically when you provide help and guidance to your clients or service users around money issues.

  • How do you spot potential problems?
  • How can you start conversations about money in a sensitive way and at the appropriate time?
  • How do you maintain good boundaries in your role as a money guidance practitioner within your main area of work?
