Event description

Description

'Only give me time, Lord, and I shall balance our books', said Cosimo de' Medici, founder of the family's political rule in Florence. If Cosimo had on the debit side of his account a vast fortune ill-gotten through the sin of usury, he hoped to establish credit through philanthropic projects that would not only save his immortal soul but burnish the family name and glorify the city of Florence. This illustrated talk will discuss how several generations of Medici patronised through anxious bookkeeping great artists such as Donatello, Benozzo Gozzoli and Michelangelo. Ross King is the bestselling author of ‘Brunelleschi’s dome’ and ‘Leonardo and The Last Supper’.

This is the 1st lecture in a series focusing on Italian city-states in the Renaissance period. You might also like to consider these lectures:-
