Event description

Description

#besmartaboutart networking is a monthly opportunity to meet artists, curators & other art world peers, view exhibitions and spaces, and expand knowledge – creative and professional alike!

In July, Be Smart About Art will visit a new West End non-profit public space, Mimosa House. Founder and Curator Daria Khan will provide insight into artist Tejal Shah’s solo exhibition ‘AS IT IS’, as well as other works on display by international artists Tejal Shah, Anne Nora Fischer and Mo Maja Moesgaard – the result of creative collaboration. Daria will also talk about the vision of Mimosa House and ongoing programme.

About Mimosa House:

This independent non-profit project space opened in September 2017. Mimosa House supports artistic process and exchange and delivers a public programme including four group exhibitions a year. The programme focuses on self-initiated artists’ projects and collaborations by female and queer artists, accompanied by introducing their work to new audiences.

About Daria Khan:

Daria is an independent curator who graduated from the Royal College of Art (Curating Contemporary Art MA) in 2013. Recent projects include a retrospective of Anish Kapoor’s architectural models and artworks at MAST foundation, Bologna. Her exhibitions have shown at the Austrian Cultural Forum, London; Photographers Gallery, London; Freiraum 21 International, MuseumsQuartier Vienna; the 5th Moscow Biennial; Spazio Carbonesi, Bologna. She was a speaker at the Exhibitions’ Histories Symposium, 2014 at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; curator in residence at the MuseumsQuartier, Vienna, 2015; a participant of EUNIC programme at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2016, and contributed a visiting curator lecture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in March 2017.

About works on display:

Tejal Shah presents a selection of new works on paper alongside a five-channel video installation Between the Waves (2012). Informed by queer, feminist and Buddhist thought, Shah explores the interdependence of all life and the importance of care in times of ethical and ecological precarity.

The Exhibition is generously supported by Lisson Gallery.

Tejal Shah (b.1979, Bhilai, India, lives in New Delhi) studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia, and at the Art Institute of Chicago, United States. Her works have been shown widely in museums, galleries, and film festivals including the Kunstmuseum, Wolfsburg (2018), Kunsthaus Hamburg (2017), the Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2017), the Office for Contemporary Art, Oslo (2016-17), Whitechapel Gallery, London (2014), dOCUMENTA 13, Kassel (2012), Centre Pompidou, Paris (2011), the Serpentine Gallery, London (2009) and Tate Modern, London (2006), among others.

Anne Nora Fischer (b.1988, Copenhagen, Denmark) holds a MFA from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and has studied “Dance and Choreography” at The Danish National School of Performing Arts and “Art and Social Practice” at Portland State University. Fischer works in a field between choreography and visual art with large-scale performances performed with professional dancers, artists, friends, lovers and the audience themselves.

Mo Maja Moesgaard (b.1980, Varde, Denmark) is an artist and queer feminist activist whose practice is driven by political questions and frustrations, as well as an enthusiasm for drawing and animation. Throughout their practice, Mo has a strong desire to work across differences and wishes to form alliances and create meaningful co-productions. Drawing and animation's position within popular culture and political activism is essential for Mo, who sees their work as equally linked to DIY/DIT political cultures and stories, as to the art institution.
