Talk - Victorian Folk Funerary Customs
Fri 2 June 2017, 10:30 – 12:00 BST
Talk by Helen Frisby (University of the West of England). Helen is a social historian who specialises in the history, folklore and material culture of death, dying and bereavement. She undertakes historical consultancy work, including appearances on the History Channel and BBC Radio 4 discussing Victorian funerals. Current projects include a monograph on 'the moral economy of the Victorian folk funeral' and an oral history project on gravedigging.
This talk is part of the accompanying programme to the current museum Dying Matters Community Display. As part of the national ‘Dying Matters’ initiative, this exhibition explores the human experience of death across cultures and throughout the ages. Through thematic displays and associated events we aim to encourage conversations about dying and empower people to make choices about their own deaths.
