Event description

Description

On the opening day of his solo exhibition at Messums Wiltshire, the abstract painter John Walker joins us for a talk at the tithe barn where he will be in conversation with Jonathan Watkins, director of Ikon Gallery since 1999. Jonathan has an impressive background working in contemporary art, including as curator of London's Serpentine Gallery and numerous Biennales around the world.

For more than a decade from the 1970s British artist John Walker was one of the most influential and imitated painters working in the UK; he exhibited alongside Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, represented his country at the 1972 Biennale, had extensive survey shows at both
the Tate and Hayward galleries and was short-listed for the first Turner Prize in 1984. John has been called "one of the standout abstract painters of the last 50 years." (Cate McQuaid, Boston Globe).

Although he continues to be regarded as a very significant painter in America, where he now lives and he has works in the Guggenheim and Museum of Modern Art in New York, he has been little known in the UK – until now. Now, in his eightieth year, he is being celebrated in two exhibitions in the UK, the first at Messums Wiltshire and the second, in November 2019, at the IKON Gallery in Birmingham.

John has taught at the Royal College in London and at Yale University. In the 1980’s he was Dean of Victoria College of Art in Melbourne, Australia. From 1993 to 2015, he taught at Boston University and is currently Professor Emeritus of Art and former head of the graduate program in Painting and Sculpture at Boston University School of Visual Arts.

He has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in NY; The Phillips Collection in DC; The Tate Gallery, London; The Hayward Gallery in London; The Kunstverein, Hamburg; The Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia; and others.

His work can be found in museum collections, including The Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; The Guggenheim Museum, New York; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, California; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Gallery, Edinburgh; Tate Gallery, London; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut.
