Sang-Hyun Song has extensive experience in the field of law as an attorney, prosecutor, attorney, and professor. In 2003, he sat as one of the first judges for the International Criminal Court, and in 2009 he was elected for two consecutive terms as the President of the ICC. During his tenure, he advocated for the rights of victims of war crimes and for them to play a larger role in prosecuting war criminals. At the ICC, President Song also worked as a liaison between states and the ICC’s mission to promote accountability for international war crimes.

As one of the world’s most prominent leaders of justice and human rights, President Song now holds title of the President of UNICEF/Korea. After twelve years of service, President Song retired from the ICC in 2015. He has been awarded for his contribution to international humanitarian law and human rights law, both in Korea and abroad. He is recipient of the highest decoration of the Korean Government (Mungunghwa), the ABA Rule of Law Award, Cornell University’s Distinguished Alumni Medal and the Korean Federal Bar Association’s Legal Culture Award.
