About this event

Join us for 90 minutes and leave with ten tools and the confidence to start a conversation about suicide with someone you're worried about. No prior training is needed.

This open session of Talking about Suicide: 10 Tools (TAS10) is for YOU if:

  • You are considering booking training for your team (leaders, founders, head of HR / L&D / People)
  • You work with young or vulnerable people (teachers, doctors, counsellors)
  • You work with the public (hospitality, taxi drivers, hairdressers)

Suicide prevention is everyone's business, and we can (and must) ALL learn to talk about suicide. We cannot leave these conversations to the professionals. Most people who die by suicide don't get as far as talking to a doctor or mental health worker.

Why should I book this training?

In the UK, a person dies by suicide every 90 minutes.

Three quarters of these are men, and suicide is the most common cause of death of people under 35.

Too many families are losing a child, sibling, parent.
Too many communities are losing a friend.
Too many workplaces are losing a colleague.

It's clear that we ALL need to learn talk about suicide, with confidence, clarity and compassion (and without fear or judgement) with our co-workers, clients, friends and family, before it's too late.

Because talking is the best form of prevention we have.

But common fears can get in the way, including:

  • What if I make things worse?
  • What if I say the wrong thing?
  • What if I put the idea in their head?

TAS10 blasts away these fears and the stigma still surrounding suicide and, in just 90 minutes, will leave you feeling ready to start the conversation.

What will I learn?

You'll learn ten practical tools and the confidence to spot the signs and have a caring conversation that could save a life.

We cover questions like:

  • What is 'healthy' vs 'unhealthy' language around suicide?
  • How, why and when should I ask someone if they are thinking about suicide?
  • How do I listen without trying to fix their problems - and why is this important?
  • How do I get consent to get help from other people and services?

What are participants saying?

Over 6,000 people have received TAS10 training so far, including teachers, medical students, helpline volunteers and police, who have said things like:

  • "I've participated in countless training courses in my career and I can't recall one that made such an impact. The session is an eye-opener, well-paced and full of incredibly useful content."
  • "Really sensitively delivered with simple, easy to follow content."
  • “Straight away the trainer established a feeling of connection with the group – difficult to do in a virtual environment.”
  • "I’ve learnt it’s OK not to say the exact right thing. Genuine connection is what’s needed.”

Frequently asked questions

Will I have to talk?

TAS10 is delivered live on Zoom, safely and sensitively. There is zero pressure to talk or share your experience, and no roleplay element; many people remain on mute the whole time, and attend simply to observe and learn.

How do you keep participants safe?

We acknowledge that most of the group will have been affected by suicide in some way; the training is respectful and sensitive. To make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable, one of our support team is always present on the call, and we ask that everyone keeps cameras on if possible.

Can I talk to someone before the training?

Of course. It's vital that you feel comfortable to attend, so you can focus fully on absorbing the learning. If you would like to attend but have questions or concerns, email rose@starttheconversation.uk to request a call.

Who created TAS10?

Talking about Suicide: 10 Tools (TAS10) was created by Rose Rowkins and Ann Feloy, shortly after Ann lost her beloved son Oliver to suicide in 2017. Ann says she wanted to create a short, powerful, accessible session that "gives others the tools I wish I'd had before I lost Oliver."

Can I book TAS10 for my team?

Absolutely. We deliver TAS10 online and in-person, and we also have an enhanced half-day version available. Email rose@starttheconversation.uk or visit www.bit.ly/allaboutTAS10

Organized by

We believe anyone can - and must - learn to talk about suicide, with confidence, clarity and compassion. HERE'S WHY:

Ann Feloy (now CEO of Olly's Future) lost her beloved son Oliver to suicide in 2017. She went on to found a charity in his name, Olly's Future, supported by his friends who are now the charity's Trustees. She wanted to create a short, powerful, accessible session that "gives others the tools I wish I'd had before I lost Oliver."

Rose Rowkins has personally equipped1000s of people around the world with 'tools for the tough stuff' including how to talk about suicide and self-harm, managing with empathy, the art of listening, and self-compassion. She previously worked as a Samaritan, teacher, integrative humanistic counsellor, youth worker, multi award-winning project lead and much more. She has supported 100s of people who have been thinking about suicide, and knows first hand that a conversation can save a life. It saved hers. Find her online here.

Together, in 2018, Ann and Rose wrote Talking about Suicide: 10 Tools (TAS10) which has been delivered by their incredible team of trainers to nearly 6,000 people, and which is on the curriculum at a number of UK medical schools.
