Event description
Linking type design variables to the emotional impact and functional utility of type.

About this event

An introduction to CEDARS+, a set of type descriptors that can describe any typeface in any script based on its formal qualities. The system aims to expand the ways in which we talk about typefaces and allows for a more expansive and variable view of our design space. While these descriptors dive deep into the craft of type design, the focus of the talk is to link type design variables to the emotional impact and functional utility of type.

Dr. Nadine Chahine is an award-winning Lebanese type designer. She is the CEO at I Love Typography Ltd and the principal at ArabicType Ltd. She has an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading, UK, a PhD from Leiden University, The Netherlands, and a Master of Studies in International Relations from Cambridge University. Nadine's work has been featured in the 5th edition of Megg's History of Graphic Design and in 2012 she was selected by Fast Company for its 100 Most Creative People in Business. In 2017, Nadine was selected by Creative Review to their Creative Leaders 50. In 2021, Nadine was elected to the board of Type Directors Club in New York.

The Typographic Circle was formed in 1976 to bring together anyone with an interest in type and typography.

We are a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers. We stage a variety of type and typography related events including a series of diverse monthly lectures by well-known industry speakers, and the annual New York Type Directors Club exhibition. Previous speakers have included Trevor BeattieStefan SagmeisterKen GarlandJonathan BarnbrookFred FladeMadeThoughtNB StudioAnthony BurrillRick PoynerSir John Hegarty… the list goes on.

Besides being serious about type, we’re a very sociable organisation with a reputation for staging enjoyable events. We try hard not to come across as being stuffy or elitist. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in type and typography, and there are no entry tests or examinations.
