Event description

Description

For full information about the conference, visit talkingmathsinpublic.uk

Talking Maths in Public is a mathematical outreach conference in the UK, for anyone who works in popularising mathematics. It is an opportunity to meet others working in the same area, and share training, discussions and networking opportunities. Conference workshops will include:

  • Performance and stage training, with science presenter James Soper

  • Introduction to stand-up comedy, with comedian and presenter Timandra Harkness

  • Writing books about maths, with author Rob Eastaway and editor Jim Martin from Bloomsbury Sigma

  • Freelance skills, with freelance public engagement project manager Rachel Mason

  • Accessibility – giving talks, and designing events and materials with access in mind, with Alison Kiddle

  • Guided development workshop for a session or resource, with Ben Sparks (University of Bath) and Sam Durbin (Royal Institution) - bring along your ideas and work on them with others

We’ll be holding a series of discussion sessions on different topics, including the relationship between outreach and education, working with high- and low-ability students, outreach to primary age groups, networking, and improving presentation/production values. We will also be including an open session for people to share stories and details of maths outreach projects they’ve worked on (submissions will open soon), and a puzzles and games lunch session to finish the conference. In addition, a photographer will be available on Friday lunchtime to take publicity photos/headshots for your own use.

Conference fee
Your conference fee includes refreshments, lunch and the conference dinner. You will need to cover your drinks at the dinner as well as your accommodation, travel and other expenses. Rooms at the University of Bath can be booked with a conference discount until 1 August 2017 – you must book these via this Eventbrite page when you book your conference ticket.
