Event description

Description

Are you wondering how your child can be motivated to do their music practice or revise for their exams?

Do you have a daily struggle about homework?

Would you like to find out more about why children display difficult behaviour when they do not want to do something, and what you can do to avoid conflict?

Do you wonder how you can support your child when things go wrong?

Is your child reluctant to try new things or take on new challenges?

In today’s demanding society, employers and universities are reporting that young people lack resilience, self-motivation and creativity. They are also noticing that young people have not always had the opportunity to develop the soft-skills that are needed in the current workplace such as problem-solving, the ability to communicate, collaborate and organise effectively.

Parents are often asking us how they can help their children to develop these skills which are learned by experience and are, increasingly, as important as having good exam results and a wealth of extra-curricular experiences and skills.

It is no wonder that, as internal and external exams approach, parents and children are dealing with the familiar struggle about homework, revision and music practice.

Parents often ask us how they can encourage their children to practise or revise when there are other things they would clearly rather be doing!

They also want to know how to motivate their children to be more organised and take responsibility for their own homework, PE kit or untidy bedroom.

We are, therefore, pleased to offer a two session workshop that addresses these questions and will give you the tools and understanding to manage these situations when they happen.

It is a practical programme for parents and carers of all children at The Royal Grammar School and is suitable for parents of children of all ages.

A Supporting Links workshop is not a lecture.

Parents will leave with a clear understanding of Resilience theory, how to encourage motivation and, more importantly, will have the skills to apply this understanding within their families.

All participants will receive follow up emails with additional information and handouts of all materials.

Through the use of group discussion, individual/group activities and written materials you will learn about:

  • Why homework can often be a battleground for parents and children.
  • How motivating children effectively can reduce conflict.
  • Why parents see how important music practice and exam revision are and children sometimes don’t.
  • The link between behaviour and communicating difficult feelings.
  • How to create an environment to increase your child's resilience
  • Strategies for parents to support and encourage children.
  • The value of getting things wrong
  • How to work towards a solution when overwhelmed
  • How to create the right environment for motivation to thrive

Previous attendees have said:

“The workshop really made me think about what I can do to help my daughter cope with her stress when things go wrong”

“I can already see how changing my approach has made my children more open to telling me how their work is going and sharing their successes and difficulties so that I can support them”

“I was constantly frustrated that my children could not see how important homework is and the struggles on a daily basis were exhausting. Having attended the workshop, I can see that I needed to approach things differently. It has been a great help!”

The workshop sessions are on Tuesdays 30th April and 7th May 2019.

The sessions will begin promptly at 7pm and will take place in Big School.

This two session workshop costs £55 per person and the cost covers both sessions. The same person must attend both sessions.

There are a limited number of places which are offered on a first come, first served basis.
