Talking Transformations: a poetry workshop on language, migration and home
Thu 4 May 2017, 18:00 – 20:00 BST
A workshop with poet Deryn Rees-Jones which explores notions of home, language and migration.
Participants will be invited to discuss what 'home' means to them, take part in exercises exploring its cultural, emotional and linguistic meanings, and take part in a creative writing session with our poet-in-residence. The material generated in this workshop will then be used by Deryn to write up a poem about home.
Anyone who speaks more than one language can attend (subject to limited number of places). The event is free but you need to register.
The workshop is part of an international project of poetry, film art and translation titled Talking Transformations: the impact of (im)migration on notions of home.
Notions of ‘home’ in Europe are becoming more fluid, being challenged and reshaped by unprecedented migration, whether we think of inner-European movements or the refugee crises. The ‘home’ is intricately connected to language: the mother tongue, the foreign language and, between them, translation.
We have developed a project which employs poetry and art translation to examine notions of ‘home’ in relation to migration. This involves commissioning and sending poetry about aspects of one’s own 'home' into a linguistic and artistic 'migration', where poems will be translated into different languages and into film art.
The original poems will be commissioned on the basis of public workshops held in Britain and Poland. The resulting poetry and films will be exhibited physically in festivals and online.
British poetry created during workshops such as this one at Europe House will be sent through linguistic and literary translation via France to Spain before returning home; in parallel, an original Polish poem will travel through translation from Poland via Romania to the UK before returning to Poland. The poems will also be translated into film art en route.

The workshop is funded by Culture, Media & Creative Industries, King's College London.
