The Cluster of tall buildings in the City of London is becoming ever denser and the buildings in it ever taller, with a dozen or so new buildings over 20 storeys in the pipeline.
This tour begins at the Lloyd’s Building (Richard Rogers & Partners), the first building in the Cluster, completed in 1986 and continues along a route which takes in several iconic buildings including 30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin, Foster & Partners) and the Leadenhall Building (The Cheesegrater, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners), as well as new buildings such as 8 Bishopsgate (WilkinsonEyre) and 22 Bishopsgate (PLP Architects). We consider the buildings' context, design, structure, and materials, whilst also addressing the environmental and social consequences of building tall in an already densely-built area. In a climate crisis and time of shifting priorities towards a more healthier and sustainability city, this conversation is vital.
