The Instituto Cervantes in Manchester presents the talk “Taming the Algorithm: Can We Keep AI From Eating Us Alive?”, featuring CSIC researcher Jesús Cerquides and moderated by Amanda Odell-West, lecturer at the University of Manchester.

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a distant promise — it’s embedded in our phones, our classrooms, our hospitals, and our headlines. It helps us work faster and think bigger, but it also blurs lines between fact and fiction, amplifies bias, and concentrates power in ways that could undermine the very foundations of democratic society.

This talk takes a critical (and occasionally irreverent) look at how AI is reshaping our world, what ethical lines we risk crossing, and why “just because we can” isn’t always a good enough reason. No easy answers — but plenty of reasons to stay vigilant.

About the panellist:

Jesús Cerquides is a researcher at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and advisor on disinformation at the Spanish Prime Minister's Cabinet. His previous positions include an assistant professorship at the University of Barcelona and the University Pablo Olavide, Chief Technology Officer and member of the board at Intelligent Software Components S.A., and Associate Director at Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS AG). His research interests include probabilistic and causal machine learning, multi-agent systems, democratic and AI-enhanced citizen science, and AI-based solutions for disinformation. He serves regularly as area chair in major AI conferences such as ECAI, IJCAI and AAAI. He is currently an associate editor of the Artificial Intelligence Journal.

Amanda Odell-West is a Senior Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Manchester and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She transitioned to law with a professional background in the NHS and biomedical research—a unique path that shaped her doctoral research in patent law and her enduring interest in the legal implications of technological evolution, particularly within the healthcare sector.

El Instituto Cervantes de Mánchester presenta la charla «Domando el algoritmo: ¿Podemos evitar que la inteligencia artificial nos devore?», con la participación del investigador del CSIC Jesús Cerquides y la moderación de Amanda Odell-West, profesora de la Universidad de Mánchester.

La inteligencia artificial ha dejado de ser una promesa lejana: hoy está integrada en nuestros teléfonos, nuestras aulas, nuestros hospitales y en los titulares de prensa. Nos ayuda a trabajar con mayor rapidez y a pensar en grande, pero también difumina las fronteras entre la realidad y la ficción, amplifica sesgos y concentra el poder de formas que podrían poner en peligro los fundamentos mismos de la sociedad democrática.

Esta charla propone una mirada crítica —y en ocasiones irreverente— sobre cómo la inteligencia artificial está transformando nuestro mundo, qué límites éticos corremos el riesgo de sobrepasar y por qué el argumento de “porque podemos hacerlo” no siempre es suficiente. No se ofrecen respuestas fáciles, pero sí muchas razones para mantenernos vigilantes.

Sobre los panelistas:

Jesús Cerquides es investigador en el Instituto de Investigación en Inteligencia Artificial (IIIA) del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) y asesor en materia de desinformación en el Gabinete de la Presidencia del Gobierno de España.

Ha ocupado anteriormente cargos como profesor ayudante en la Universidad de Barcelona y en la Universidad Pablo de Olavide, director de tecnología (CTO) y miembro del consejo de administración en Intelligent Software Components S.A., así como director asociado en el banco suizo UBS AG (Union Bank of Switzerland).

Sus líneas de investigación incluyen el aprendizaje automático probabilístico y causal, los sistemas multiagente, la ciencia ciudadana democrática y potenciada por IA, y las soluciones basadas en inteligencia artificial para combatir la desinformación. Participa regularmente como presidente de área en congresos internacionales de referencia en inteligencia artificial como ECAI, IJCAI y AAAI. Actualmente, es editor asociado de la revista Artificial Intelligence Journal.

Amanda Odell-West es profesora de Derecho de la Propiedad Intelectual en la Universidad de Mánchester y Senior Fellow de la Higher Education Academy. Su transición al ámbito jurídico se produjo tras una trayectoria profesional en el NHS y en la investigación biomédica, un recorrido singular que dio forma a su investigación doctoral en derecho de patentes y a su interés permanente por las implicaciones legales de la evolución tecnológica, especialmente en el sector sanitario.
