TANGO AND MORE!
As a boy ASTOR PIAZZOLLA played tangos in the waterfront cafes of Buenos Aires. Classical studies in Paris followed after which he turned his attention to the traditional Argentinian tango, creating the e lyrical Tango Nuevo, more like a Bossa Nova. He survived death threats from traditionalists and went on to conquer the world, playing with world class musicians like Gerry Mulligan, Daniel Barenboim and Yo Yo Ma. He died in the 70s.
Tango and More is a group of fine Cambridge musicians formed to play Piazzolla’s wonderful music. We have played at numerous venues, including the Edinburgh Fringe and local jazz festivals
Piazzolla stands at a crossroads between tango, Bach and Jazz This scaled down ensemble gives us a chance to display a more flexible, jazz-oriented style, extending to other related areas, including the music of Gerry Mulligan, Jobim, Charlie Haden, and Chick Corea.
As a special treat, we will be joined by Charbel Mattar a formidable baritone who is an opera soloist at Covent Garden, and is also well known locally for his exciting performances of Cole Porter, Gershwin Shakespeare songs and spirituals with Dog Days at Hot Numbers and other venues.
There are unrivalled melodies and the musicians are really into the music which is passionate, exciting and very danceable.
