HOW TO WIN, KEEP AND CHARM YOUR AUDIENCE – a half-day presentation skills training workshop with one of the UK’s leading trainers of stand-up comedians, Chris Head.
At The Art of New Business, we like to offer events that inspire people. This masterclass is for anyone who has to pitch ideas as part of their job; whether that's to a client as part of the client-services team, the board of your agency as a member of the management team, or as part of an agency creative or new business team.
Stand-up comedy is all about getting laughs. Strip that away and what are you left with? A huge amount in fact. Stand-ups charm, engage, tell stories, create impact, surprise and memorability. Whilst you won't usually be going for several laughs a minute, all of this is relevant and applicable to corporate environments to enhance your message and its delivery, and to give you increased confidence in presentations, pitches and meetings.
Ever had to deal with difficult clients in meetings or pitches where they won't give anything away or worse still, spend the whole time looking at their phone? You will also learn useful strategies for how to defuse situations like this, or as they say in the world of comedy - how to deal with hecklers.
Our trainer Chris Head has established himself as one of the UK's leading comedy coaches and has over fifteen years’ experience as a director of live comedy. Practically every night of the week there is a comedian on stage somewhere putting his ideas, direction and training into practice. Alongside this work, he has developed a unique training programme to apply comedy communication techniques in corporate contexts. Clients have included ITV, M&C Saatchi, UBS, Bank Paribas, Channel 4, Google, BBH and more. His coaching style is analytical, clear, warm and inspiring – and highly practical.
We ran a similar event last year (we have added the heckling training especially for our Manchester audience) where we had senior level attendees from AKQA, Stein IAS, The Advertising Association and LBi. You can read this event write up for more info.
"Just wanted to email you all to say thank you for putting on a great workshop yesterday. I came away with loads of new things to explore further and it has got me thinking about communicating in new ways."
"I just wanted to say thanks again for yesterday. You made some really interesting points and I'm loving some of the techniques, which I'm looking forward to trying out!"

ABOUT THE SESSION:
In this unique, practical and fast-paced workshop you will learn a range of new tools to charm, engage, surprise, stimulate and of course get laughs. We'll watch video of stand-ups in action and you will take part in exercises to try out their techniques.
-The range of communication tools stand-ups use are totally adaptable and applicable to a corporate and business environment to enhance your message and its delivery.
-You will gain all sorts of insights into how to be effectively funny, but where stand-ups are going for laughs, you'll learn how to use the same technique to create impact, surprise or memorability –and it has been demonstrated to be effective even with the most serious topics.
-We will also explore how comedians deal with those awkward disruptive people in the audience, the hecklers, and how you can use their techniques on your audience.
-The tools you'll learn can be used in meetings, pitching and of course standing-up and presenting.
You will learn how to:
- Get the audience engaged with you and your message from the off
- Make what you have to say seem natural and motivated
- Get the timing right and find the a good pace and rhythm
- Use the classic set-up/punch rhythm to structure your message for maximum impact, no matter how serious the message is
- Use misdirection to get a laugh or to make a fact or statement more striking and memorable
- Explore strategies for dealing with people asking deliberately unhelpful questions, making comments at your expense, interruptions and talking, distracting phone use and other ‘heckles’.
When & Where
The Art of New Business
The Art of New Business is a collaborative network of like-minded individuals set up by Karla Morales-Lee and Sarah Bradley. Our focus is on finding new ways of winning business, and giving support and advice to each other. We run events in London and Manchester for new business executives, managers and directors working in the creative sector. For each event we select speakers who can inspire our network to think differently about what they do and how to do it. We want to lead the search for ‘a better way’. That means better people, better processes, better tools and better results. Bringing in new business for your agency can often be a lonely, high pressured job, so this network has been set up to support and inspire those of you facing daily pressure to bring in new business, often in silo from the rest of their organisation.
