TAROT OF BREAKING BAD
Sun 9 April 2017, 16:00 – 19:00 BST
Tarot is typically used to understand the stories of our lives and gain insight into what the next ‘episode’ may contain. A single spread contains all the ingredients needed to understand how our relationships, goals, drives and resources determine our destiny, even before we recognise or fully face our own challenges.
Thus it isn’t surprising that many writers, poets and artists use the Tarot as an aid to creativity. Tarot reveals the hidden dynamics of life to those immersed in its flow but bewildered by its complexity. That power can be turned on its head to create original and compelling stories using spreads of cards to generate characters and narrative from the archetypal imagery contained within.
Breaking Bad is widely regarded as one of the greatest television series of all time and is listed in Guinness book of records as the most critically acclaimed show and among the most-watched cable shows on American television. It tells the story of a struggling high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with cancer who turns to a life of crime to secure his family's future.
This talk will explore the story arc of Breaking Bad using Tarot to signpost the major plot developments - ‘the cruxes’ - and reveal the characters of its protagonists - ‘the cards’. On the way I will highlight how Tarot reading and storytelling can inform and enrich each other by recreating the Breaking Bad story with Tarot to show how the archetypal aspects of the cards relate to the characters and their unfolding destinies.
